Bhutan
Bhutan* is known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon” due to the violent storms that descend from the Himalayas. It is bordered by China to the north and northwest, and by India to the east, south, and southwest. The capital, Thimphu, is also the largest city, and became the permanent seat of government in 1962. Bhutan is largely mountainous, with the Duars along its southern border being the only flat land. The country remained isolated until the 1960s, gradually opening to tourists in 1974 after the construction of its first road. The majority of Bhutan’s population, the Bhotia, are of Tibetan origin, and the official language is Dzongkha, though English and Nepali are widely spoken. The official religion is Lamaist Mahayana Buddhism, or Tibetan Buddhism, introduced after the arrival of the Bhotia. Bhutan is rich in culture and biodiversity, with nearly three-quarters of its area covered by forests. The country’s stunning landscapes include lush valleys, snow-capped peaks, and diverse flora and fauna. Bhutan has preserved its culture and traditions over the centuries. Trekking is popular, offering opportunities to explore the pristine wilderness, old trading routes, and views of the Himalayas. Trekking programs are well-organized, with trained teams handling all necessities.
*Food:* Bhutanese cuisine is limited, with spicy chilies and cheese being staples, but trekkers will be served a variety of dishes including continental, Chinese, and Indian options.
*Money:* The currency is the Ngultrum (Nu), which is on par with the Indian Rupee. Approximately 1 USD = Nu 83.5.
*Clothing:* Due to varying climates, appropriate clothing is essential. From May to September, cotton clothes with a sweater or light jacket are sufficient. From November to April, very warm clothing is necessary. When visiting religious sites, avoid shorts and hats, and dress appropriately.
*Visa Formalities:* We handle visa applications with Bhutan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Processing takes a minimum of five working days, and visa clearance is required before departure. Without proof of payment, Drukair will not issue tickets, and the visa will not be granted. The visa fee is US$40.00, payable at the airport upon arrival, with two passport-sized photographs required.
*Air Travel:* Drukair is Bhutan’s national airline, with flights available from Kathmandu, Bangkok, New Delhi, and Kolkata. We can arrange Drukair tickets at a competitive price, or you may purchase them from any Drukair reservation office worldwide.
