Chhewang N.Lama

With his cross-cultural & International management experience Chhewang is the driving force behind the Responsible Treks initiative.

 Chhewang originated from the remote Nyinba Valley, located in Humla, West Nepal where the people are of Tibetan origin. Chhewang believes this rich cultural heritage is what links him with his passion for the mountains. As a young man Chhewang studied hard knowing that the future would take him much further than his small mountain town. After grade 3 he moved to Kathmandu for further studies and then gained his degree in business from a top Indian college. 

Chhewang has worked in the tourism industry for over 10 years & is now the founder of Responsible Treks. To this day Chhewang remains inspired by the magic of the mountains and its people. He is passionate about both his work & sharing the amazing experiences of Nepal, Tibet, Sikkim& Bhutan with others. 

Chhewang believes that in addition to his extensive trek-leading and operating experience, it is his close relationship and commitment to the many indigenous communities that gives Responsible Treks its unique signature.


Daniel Mas de Xaxars - Adviser

Daniel has successfully developed two businesses in Barcelona & brings his extensive experience of Marketing & Communication to the Responsible Treks team. In 2002 Daniel set off to explore further his interest in dream practice & whilst travelling in India made contact with the Bon-Buddhist Menri Monastery. After a three year period of learning & practicing in the traditions of Bon, Daniel further concentrated his studies & now specializes in Tibetan Language & Culture. Throughout his journey Daniel has remained fascinated by Nepal; particularly the remote areas of the Tibetan border & remains passionate about preserving the traditional heritage of the Tibetan culture. Daniel will use his knowledge, expertise & business acumen to support Responsible Treks in achieving their innovative & sustainable marketing strategies.

Emma Finney - UK Representative

Emma is passionate about wilderness landscapes and the mountain regions. She has extensive experience of trekking; mountaineering & healing practice in a number of countries, including Patagonia; Tien Shan (Kyrgyzstan), Tibet, Burma, China, Outer Mongolia, Indonesia & here in Nepal. It is the landscapes; cultural heritage & people of Nepal however that continue to touch & capture her imagination. With a passion to share & explore the remote regions of the Hidden Himalayas Emma will work to promote Nepal's traditional heritage & joins the Responsible Treks team as our UK representative.

Pemba Yungdung Lama - Sales & Operation Manager

With a focus on customer service & operating experience Pemba will liaise with our clients, dealing with all aspects of travel & trek operations. Pemba is in charge of the daily operations in the office. He has very deep knowledge about Himalayas and will definitely customize you a dream trip.

Sonam N. Lama – Co-Founder/ Trek Leader

Mr Sonam Born in Bargaun-Humla, amidst the Himalayas. Mr. Lama is new to the Responsible Treks team. We welcome him on board and respect his keen desire to establish a career in tourism. He has just completed basic mountaineering and ice climbing training from Khumbu Climbing Center. In addition- Sonam is a licensed guide by the authority of Nepal government.

Rikjin Lama - General Manager & Senior Trek Leader

Rikjin was born & raised on the Tibetan Border deep within the hidden Himalayas. After graduating Rikjin moved to Kathmandu to further his studies and it was here that he obtained his first job as a Sherpa. After a year of carrying & fixing tents on long mountain treks Rikjin seized the opportunity to progress onto becoming a guide.

Knowing the importance of English Rikjin studied hard in both Kathmandu and out in the field with the help of his international clients. Today Rikjin is not only an incredible speaker of the English language but he is also widely recognized as being one of Nepal's premium Trek Leaders; visiting Mt Kailash in Tibet some 50 times. He can be seen regularly leading treks in Nepal & Tibet on a multitude of terrains and at altitudes reaching 6,000m. Rikjin is passionate about his work & strives to ensure every aspect of the trekking/mountaineering experience is enjoyable & runs smoothly. Now he is more in the office working on Sales and Marketing.

Bikram Shamser Kunwar

Bikram Shamser Kunwar – Accountant/Customer Service

Bikram studied commerce. Mr. Kunwar joined responsible treks in Jan 2012. He is in charge of all the financial aspects of our company.

Thinley N. Lama

Thinley N. Lama – Customer Service/Trip Leader

Thinley is new to mountain guiding field. He is originally from Bargaun-Humla. In addition to English and Nepali He speaks fluent Tibetan and he is learning Chinese. He is a good singer so its great fun trekking with him. Thinley is a licensed guide by the authority of Nepal government.

Rinzin Phunjok Lama

Rinzin Phunjok Lama – Sustainable Manager

Rinzin P. Lama is from Humla. He has extensively traveled throughout Himalayas.

Mr. Lama received scholarship from WWF Nepal to pursue his B.Sc. Forestry at the Institute of Forestry Pokhara. He completed a six month long training program in leadership and restoration ecology with non-profit organization EarthCorps based in Seattle, USA. Currently, he is working as Coordinator for Division of High - Altitude Mammals Research and Conservation at Global Primate Network-Nepal. Meanwhile, he is leading field project on Pallas's cat Research and Conservation in Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal and Snow Leopard Research and Conservation Project in Humla district. Most recently has been awarded with Sidney Byers Scholarship for Wildlife Conservation though the WCN Scholarship Program to pursue his M.Sc. at the J.F. Blumenbach Institute of Zoology and Anthropology at Georg-August- Universität Göttingen, Germany. This Scholarship recognizes dedicated individuals who have demonstrated exceptional promise for lifelong leadership as wildlife conservationists.

Rinzin will be leading our life time conservation related trips, whilst developing & sharing his insight & knowledge of local flora and fauna.

Pemba Gyaltsen Sherpa

Pemba Gyaltsen Sherpa- Trekking/Mountaineering Guide

One of our best guide, Pemba Sherpa hails from Phortse in Khumbu Region. He started his guiding career in 2010 and has been with Rt since our inception. He is wilderness first-aid trained. Mr. Sherpa is a licensed guide. He loves climbing and also he is trained with ice and mountaineering.

Here at Responsible Treks our guides are our biggest asset. They are responsible for the successful delivery of our trips and the enjoyment and safety of our clients, whether in the mountains, the city, the jungle or on the river. All our mountain guides are carefully chosen. They are safety conscious and are trained in high altitude sickness and emergency protocol. They play an important role in the liaison between client and culture, providing useful insights into the Nepali way of life. All guides are licensed by the government and are trained in responsible travel, first aid and high altitude sickness.
